Old Cartmel Cottage - Local Area Information

Middleham is often described as the Jewel in the Crown of Wensleydale in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

Georgian houses surround the two old cobbled market areas, and the castle famous for its Richard III connections stands proudly on the edge of the village and a little further up the hill is the mound called ‘Williams Hill’ where there are the remains of an earlier motte & bailey castle from the time of William the conqueror.

In the market squares are three pubs all serving food, a bistro, three teashops, a fish & chip shop, the very well stocked Central Stores which sell food, drink & newspapers, and three antique/gift shops too.

Middleham Racing Stables

Middleham has a colourful history, a thriving horse racing community all set amidst the breathtaking scenery of Wensleydale. There are fifteen training establishments in and around the village at this present time, with close to 500 horses stabled here. There are grass & all weather gallops on the low & high moors where you can observe the horses been exercised each morning. Each year on Good Friday the stables hold an open day raising money for racing charities.
